The injection fee of £215 is per injection and does not include the consultation fee and cannot be booked without a consultation with our Sports Medicine Doctor, Dr Angela Duncan.  When you book online you are booking the initial consultation. Our Orthopaedic Consultants do not offer Prolotherapy Injections.

What is Prolotherapy?

Prolotherapy injections are used to strengthen ligaments.

Prolotherapy injections work by stimulating the body to make new collagen fibres that are laid down within the substance of the ligaments, thickening and strengthening them.  

Ask your physiotherapist whether prolotherapy is an option for you.

Prolotherapy Treatment

You will have a thorough assessment by Dr Angela Duncan to assess if treatment is appropriate and the treatment plan will be explained to you.  Dr Duncan may suggest a different course of treatment or advice depending on her clinical judgement. 

We use them for knee, ankle and shoulder pain where there is underlying instability. 

For example, where there has been a previous ankle injury leaving some instability (as in 40% of ankle injuries), not only do they improve pain and restore more natural movement patterns, they can also help to restore function and improve pain further up the movement chain; in the knee, hip or back.

The solution injected is hypertonic dextrose along with some local anaesthetic. The solution provokes inflammation which attracts collagen-producing cells, resulting in thicker and healthier collagen fibres. 

Most people require a course of two or three injections. The effects can last for many years. 

The injections are safe and evidence-based. 

How do I book to have an Ostenil Plus injection?

When the appointment is booked, please do not take or apply any ibuprofen, naproxen or diclofenac on the day and for three days after treatment.
